A family of four would be £4,676 worse off under the SNP's austerity programme for an independent Scotland, analysis by Scottish Labour confirms.
SNP deputy leader Keith Brown has committed the nationalists to more than halving Scotland's fiscal deficit within three years, a reduction steeper and deeper than the austerity George Osborne pursued whilst he was Tory Chancellor.
The Scottish Government's GERS report found the country had a deficit of £12.63billion in the last financial year. Brown's austerity programme to halve the deficit within less than 36 months would require cuts to spending of £1,169 per person in Scotland, leaving a family of four £4,676 worse off.
It is now clear the SNP’s plan for Scotland is to leave the UK and impose Tory turbo-charged austerity on our communities.
Scottish Labour's finance spokesperson, James Kelly MSP, said:
"The SNP's plan to leave the UK would leave families more than £4,600 worse off.
“This would mean unprecedented levels of austerity which would put all of Scotland’s cherished public services, including the NHS, in the SNP’s firing line simply to meet such draconian fiscal deficit reduction targets.
"Independence would mean turbo-charged austerity and economic uncertainty under the SNP's plan to ditch the pound for a separate currency.
"The SNP's threadbare case for leaving the UK is falling apart.
“The people of Scotland now have a clear choice between austerity and cuts with the SNP and the Tories, or £70 billion worth of new investment with a Labour government."
