Commenting on Scotland’s overburdened and underfunded prison service, Scottish Labour justice spokesperson James Kelly said:

“ Scotland’s overburdened and underfunded prison service is approaching crisis point.

“The Scottish Prison Service is under immense financial pressure due to deep cuts from successive SNP governments.

“HMP Barlinnie is now teetering on the brink of chaos due to severe overcrowding and chronic underfunding.

“The human cost of the cuts to the Scottish Prison Service can be seen in the rise in staff illnesses and the shameful increase in prisoner deaths.

“The time has come for action from the Justice Secretary and investment in a modern prison service that responds to challenges such as our ageing prisoner population and substance misuse crisis in prisons.”
